Butler’s Choice: Waitrose Wines

By in The Butler Wine-Show

It pains me to say it, but cameraman buys his wines from Waitrose, not me. To add salt to the wound he dragged me down there to show me the two wines he loves:

A Lugana from the shores of Lake Garda in Italy and a fine red Rhone, St Joseph (which is currently on offer with 25% off). Wonderfully smooth, it can be drunk happily on its own. Waitrose is currently peddling the 2007 which was a fantastic year in the Rhone so worth stocking up on.

To be fair, they are both interesting wines, and he swears that all his family and friends have never looked back since trying these wines.

While there it was nice to see two fine wines from South Africa on the wooden shelves from Rustenberg, where I was a couple of weeks ago, having the time of my life. Many thanks Big Simon and Happy Dave.

Get your hands on their Stellenbosch Chardonnay white, or John X Merriman red (also available at the Medicine Chest restaurant in Hove – or my store, dammit!).

Both wines represent a huge amount of flavour and class for the money.

Blimey, Waitrose come out of this well. I better stop there!
